Senior Horsemaster’s Course 2

    The course is designed to:

    • Provide students with an in depth knowledge of horse management and care.
    • Expand on the subjects covered in SHM1 (please note, it is not mandatory to complete SHM1 before starting SHM2 – see entry criteria).

    SHM 2 is ideal for:

    • Those aspiring to manage an equestrian business.
    • Anyone who is looking to progress in their career with horses

    Upon enrolment you are provided with access onto TOCES’ online E-Learning Centre where you will find your study guide, study planner, Course Advisor and tutor information, course material, assignments and other helpful study resources.

    Course material consists of:

    • Detailed illustrated text in pdf format which you can print or download.
    • Online learning resources including in-text questions and activities.
    • Pre-recorded webinars, online lectures and videos.
    • You will study and complete six work assignments. Referring to the course material, you will complete the assignments at your own pace, within the maximum study period, and submit online for marking and assessment.  Your work is assessed by a qualified tutor, graded and returned to you with detailed feedback.
    • Upon completion of the course you will receive a graded TOCES certificate.

     

    To supplement the theoretical learning, you will be provided with a Practical Skills Workbook, which details the practical skills needed at this level. Satisfactory attainment of each skill listed in the Skills Workbook is recorded and verified by an experienced colleague or friend.

     

    You may choose to attend the optional study week at TOCES.

    • Module 1 Anatomy and Physiology

      The aim of this module is to develop the learner’s knowledge of:
      – Skeletal structure
      – Musculature
      – The circulatory and respiratory system
      – The nervous and sensory system
      – The endocrine and urinary systems

    • Module 2 Horse Management

      The aim of this module is to develop the learner’s knowledge of:
      – Inherent behaviour
      – Grassland management
      – Conformation

    • Module 3 Equine Nutrition

      The aim of this module is to develop the learner’s knowledge of:
      – The equine digestive tract and digestion
      – The constitutes of feed stuffs and nutritional values
      – Calculating rations

    • Module 4 Health and Fitness

      The aim of this module is to develop the learner’s knowledge of:
      – Equine first aid
      – Health and disease
      – Fittening for performance
      – Lameness

    • Module 5 Equine Reproduction

      The aim of this module is to develop learners’ knowledge of:
      – The selection of breeding stock
      – Reproductive anatomy
      – The covering procedure
      – Pregnancy and foaling
      – Management of young stock

    • Module 6 Equestrian Business Management

      The aim of this module is to develop learners’ knowledge of:
      – Business planning
      – Financial management
      – Business and the law
      – Health and safety at work
