BHS Stage 3 Care

    The course is designed to:

    • Prepare students for the BHS Equine Excellence Pathway ‘Groom Pathway’ Stage 3 Care examination (Please note that TOCES do not hold these examinations and it is not mandatory to complete this assessment following the completion of this programme).

    BHS Stage 3 Care is ideal for:

    • Students who have completed the BHS Stage 2 Care examination or have comparable experience who would like to further enhance their knowledge in the care and management of horses
    • Anyone who is looking to progress in their career with horses
    • Those wishing to become an independent groom

    Upon enrolment students are provided with access onto our online E-Learning Centre where they will find all of their course material, assignments and other helpful study resources.

     

    The course is divided into modules which consist of:

    • Detailed illustrated text.
    • In-text questions to answer and in-text activities to complete as students work through their course material. Separate answer sheets are provided at the end of each module.

     

    Over the course of the programme you will complete nine assignments. Referring to the course material, you work through the assignments at your own pace and submit each in turn for marking and assessment.  Your work is assessed by qualified tutors, graded where appropriate and returned to you with detailed feedback.

     

    You are also provided with a Practical Skills Workbook, which details the practical skills needed. You record satisfactory attainment of each skill listed and seek verification of the achievement by an experienced colleague or friend.

     

    You may choose to attend the optional study week at TOCES’ yard in Suffolk.

     

    Please note that you cannot train for the riding section of the Stage 1 to 4 examinations through distance learning and that in order to attain a BHS Care and Management qualification you must take the examination at a BHS Examination Centre. Structure and content of the range of BHS Courses may be subject to amendment to reflect changes in the BHS examination structure.

    • aged 14 or more – there is no upper age limit (please note that to take the BHS Stage 2 Care examination with the BHS, you must be at least 17 years of age)
    • interested in learning more about horse care and management
    • If you intend to complete the BHS examinations, the BHS require you to complete these in order from Stage 1, however you can choose to complete a higher level BHS preparation course with us for your own interest

    Module/Unit Details

    • Module 1 Anatomy and Physiology

      The aim of this module is to develop learners’ knowledge of:
      – The muscular structure of the horse
      – The circulatory and respiratory systems
      – The structure of the lower leg and foot
      – Conformation
      – The gaits, good and faulty action

    • Module 2 Horse Health

      The aim of this module is to develop learners’ knowledge of:
      – Signs of good and ill health
      – Prevention, causes, signs and treatments of minor injuries, sickness and minor ailments
      – Causes of lameness
      – Parameters for temperature, pulse and respiration
      – Worming
      – When to call the vet – providing the right information

    • Module 3 Management and General Handling

      The aim of this module is to develop learners’ knowledge of:
      – Yard routines
      – Handling young, highly strung and horses with behavioural problems
      – Stable vices
      – Travelling horses

    • Module 4 Feeding and Nutrition

      The aim of this module is to develop learners’ knowledge of:
      – The rules of feeding and watering
      – The nutrients and feed values
      – Calculating rations for size, type and work level

    • Module 5 Fittening and Competition

      The aim of this module is to develop learners’ knowledge of:
      – Preparing and looking after fit horses
      – The preparation for showing and competitions
      – Schooling for mental, muscular and gymnastic development
      – The care required at and after competition
      – Competition types and ruled

    • Module 6 Saddlery

      The aim of this module is to develop learners’ knowledge of:
      – Fitting and using saddlery and bits for young horse, competition horses and horses with behavioural problems
      – Horse clothing including exercise bandages
      – The double bridle
      – The tack room and care of tack

    • Module 7 Shoeing

      The aim of this module is to develop learners’ knowledge of:
      – The well shod foot
      – Faulty shoeing
      – Remedial shoeing, pads and studs

    • Module 8 Yard Design and Grazing Management

      The aim of this module is to develop learners’ knowledge of:
      – Planning a yard
      – The advantages and disadvantages of types of stabling and stable fittings
      – Maintaining grazing for daily, year-round use

    • Module 9 General Knowledge

      The aim of this module is to develop learners’ knowledge of:
      – Safety rules and fire precautions.
      – The accident procedure
      – Road safely
      – The aims and objectives of the British Horse Society and benefits of membership
      – The BHS departments

    • Module 10 Optional Study Week

      Practical application of the knowledge gained through studying the course modules and completing the work assignments will be demonstrated and assessed. A mock BHS Stage 3 Care examination will be taken on the final day.
