
Level 3 Horse Management
The course is designed to:
- Provide students with a good overview of horse management and care.
- Expand on the subjects covered in BSM.
- Prepare students for progression onto the Level 4/5 Horse Management.
Level 3 Horse Management is ideal for:
- Those involved in horse care who would like to further enhance their knowledge in the care and management of horses.
- Anyone who is looking to start a career with horses.
- Preparation for BHS Stages 2 and 3.

Upon enrolment students are provided with access onto our online E-Learning Centre where they will find all of their course material, assignments and other helpful study resources.
The course is divided into modules which consist of:
- Detailed illustrated text.
- In-text questions to answer and in-text activities to complete as students work through their course material. Separate answer sheets are provided at the end of each module.
Over the course of the programme you will complete five assignments. Referring to the course material, you work through the assignments at your own pace and submit each in turn for marking and assessment. Your work is assessed by qualified tutors, graded where appropriate and returned to you with detailed feedback.
You will also be provided with a Practical Skills Workbook, which details the practical skills needed. You record satisfactory attainment of each skill listed and seek verification of the achievement by an experienced colleague or friend.
You may choose to attend the optional study week at TOCES’ yard in Suffolk.
- Aged 14 or more – there is no upper age limit
- Interested in learning more about horse care and management

Module 2 The Grass Kept Horse
The aim of this module is to develop the learner’s knowledge of:
– The paddock e.g. fencing, safety, shelter,
– Suitable watering arrangement
– Grasses, fertilisation and pasture management
– Suitable care of grass
– Common ailments e.g. laminitis, sweet itch, cracked heels and mud fever

The aim of this module is to develop the learner’s knowledge of:
– The equine digestive tract and digestion
– The rules of feeding and watering
– The constitutes of feed stuffs and nutritional values
– Calculating rations
– Internal parasites

Module 4 Horse Health
The aim of this module is to develop the learner’s knowledge of:
– The signs of good and ill health
– Preventative medicine and vaccinations
– Maintaining health
– Hygiene
– Teeth, ageing and care
– Inherent behaviour

Module 5 Saddlery
The aim of this module is to develop the learner’s knowledge of:
– The care and fitting of various items of tack
– Bits and bitting
– Health problems associated with ill-fitting tack

Module 6 The Foot, Shoeing and Lameness
The aims of this module is to develop learners’ knowledge of:
– The anatomy of the lower leg and foot
– Reasons for shoeing
– The shoeing procedure
– Lameness recognition and the identification and treatment of the cause

Module 7 Anatomy and Physiology
The aim of this module is to develop the learner’s knowledge of:
– The skeleton – bones, joints, tendons and ligaments
– Muscular structure and function
– Cardiovascular systems, structure and function
– Respiratory systems, structure and function
– The urinary systems
– The nervous and sensory systems

Module 8 Fittening the Horse
The aim of this module is to develop the learner’s knowledge of:
– Fittening programmes including interval training
– Lungeing
– The care requirements before, during and after competition
– Travelling, loading and unloading

Module 9 General Knowledge
The aim of this module is to develop the learner’s knowledge of:
– Accident prevention in the stable, yard, field, when loading, when travelling and whilst riding
– Fire prevention and action
– Manual Handling
– Personal protective equipment and clothing
– The accident report book
– The Health and Safety at Work Act 1994
